Hiya fam,

Yeah I know, here we fucking go again. First of all, my apologies. A year ago when these clowns said they were gonna shut down Oppo, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to go off and figure out a new home for Oppo but then promptly didn’t do anything with oppositelock.com because they backed down. I should have known they would go back on that and pressed on instead of acting complacent. My bad. Technically I “own” (heavy airquotes) this Kinja site. It’s a total formality because I’ve always thought Oppo was about all of us. At any rate, I feel obligated to try to jump in and help steer us to a new home, obviously leveraging the actual Oppo domain I purchased a while back in case this ever happened.

Now then, there are several stops on this train ride to a new home. I have waaay more questions at this point than answers about how this is going to work. What tools will we need? How much they will they cost? Can we migrate users and data? How many of the key features that we use to support this site we can get? As much as we loved to shit on Kinja, there’s no arguing it is a fairly feature-rich platform that will be tough to replace without spending some money. I’m willing to take some of that on up front but this thing will ultimately have to be able to sustain itself.

Anyway, sorry for the late Friday ramble. This news was sudden and I had too many meetings today to respond before now. I will say that we are pulling in a few key folks to figure out our roadmap and start to take on some action items. We are meeting tomorrow (yay, zoom!) to start sketching out a plan so I promise there will be more on this later.

I just paid $2500 to get a new water pump and associated doodads replaced in my Land Rover. I understand the sinking feeling.

We’re all here behind you. I think any kind of community, even if it’s just a Vbullitin or Discord style forum, is still better than nothing.

I think we could get similar format on a word press site, it would just take some work. Ramblin told me about DriveTribe Oppo so maybe we use that for a staging site until we can get oppositelock.com up and running?

I know no one asked (yet) but I’d be willing to pay a small monthly fee to help out with the upkeep. Maybe setting up a Patreon or some sort of subscription-based thing could help with running a domain and servers? if everyone pitched in just a few bucks, could it add up to be enough?

There ends my tech-savvy coding language lol I have no idea.

I can help out with the graphic design interface (since it’s what I’m educated in and it’s what I do for work) if it matters - be it just advice and critique of existing visuals or with creating new ones. As mentioned I have no expertise in coding or actually making it work, just making it pretty. I have a lot more experience in of print, but I have done some UX UI stuff as well...

You long time Jalop staff are the best and are basically what is keeping it afloat. Please save us! Or at the very least find us a nice cozy underpass the take shelter under temporarily. Something, anything. I'm worried about the splintering of the Oppo community like what happened last year.

It’s amazing how much this place means to me and I’ve barely been here a year. And I only discovered Jalo pnik two years ago. Just want to thank you for all that you've done to help this amazing community and keep it alive as well as kill many many hours reading about rusty Jeeps.

The DriveTribe seems to be getting the most traction, for now. Maybe just redirect to there for now? Possible we’ll find a better solution down the road, but seems to be the best of the available options at the moment (and reconnects us with LaLD).

Honestly, I think a lot of what we do here could be accomplished with an old school BBS/forum. It could be split up into sections (long form, random musings, shitposts, meet-ups, questions, etc.)

I just stumbled across this whole fresh drama from a main site post and I can’t express how poor of a decision it would be to gut the user publishing Kinja functionality from Jalopnik.

I’m a filthy heathen who only occasionally browses Oppo and typically just reads the front page like a chump (a chump !), but I’ve been dipping my toe into the weird and wacky Oppo flipside of this site since Murilee Martin squeezed it out.

Jalopnik is Oppo. Oppo is Jalopnik .

Killing it would be like slaughtering cows to save money on feed costs at a dairy farm, and then wondering why the milk production is so low .

Fuck .

These people have all the money in the world, and still have zero common cents.

It’s a pun. Sense. Cents. Because of the mon - god dammit.

If Oppo ends up somewhere else, I (pinky) swear that I’ll actually try to participate constructively this time. I nearly applied with Rory when calls went out , but pres umed I wasn’t nearly cool enough to quality (plus living in AK would make any travel an absolute nightmare). Perhaps it’s time I started putting shape to some of my ramblings.
